Had almost exactly this happen with mine last summer — turned out to be a thermal protection issue rather than anything electrical going wrong wrong, if that makes sense.
The Orion-Tr Smart has a built-in thermal cutout that kicks in around 40°C ambient. If yours is tucked away somewhere without decent airflow — behind a panel, in an engine bay locker, anywhere that traps heat — it'll shut down once the engine warms everything up, then mysteriously "recover" after you've stopped and scratched your head for ten minutes.
A few things worth checking:
- Where is it physically mounted? Mine was wedged in a compartment that turned out to act like a little oven once the engine ran for 20+ minutes
- Check the VictronConnect app — it logs thermal events and you'll see if it's reporting over-temperature shutdowns
- Input voltage drop — a warm alternator sometimes delivers slightly different voltage; worth watching the input reading in the app while it's happening
- Cable sizing — undersized cables create resistance, which creates heat, which compounds everything
I ended up relocating mine with a short extension, mounting it vertically on an external bracket with some airflow around it. Touch wood, no issues since.
The 30A unit does run warm under load even in ideal conditions — it's not the most thermally relaxed bit of kit Victron make.
Anyone else had similar? Curious whether the engine bay versus habitation space mounting makes a significant difference in people's real-world experience — I've seen conflicting things in the Victron community forums about this.
