Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out when engine's warm — any ideas?

Had almost exactly this happen with mine last summer — turned out to be a thermal protection issue rather than anything electrical going wrong wrong, if that makes sense.

The Orion-Tr Smart has a built-in thermal cutout that kicks in around 40°C ambient. If yours is tucked away somewhere without decent airflow — behind a panel, in an engine bay locker, anywhere that traps heat — it'll shut down once the engine warms everything up, then mysteriously "recover" after you've stopped and scratched your head for ten minutes.

A few things worth checking:

  • Where is it physically mounted? Mine was wedged in a compartment that turned out to act like a little oven once the engine ran for 20+ minutes
  • Check the VictronConnect app — it logs thermal events and you'll see if it's reporting over-temperature shutdowns
  • Input voltage drop — a warm alternator sometimes delivers slightly different voltage; worth watching the input reading in the app while it's happening
  • Cable sizing — undersized cables create resistance, which creates heat, which compounds everything

I ended up relocating mine with a short extension, mounting it vertically on an external bracket with some airflow around it. Touch wood, no issues since.

The 30A unit does run warm under load even in ideal conditions — it's not the most thermally relaxed bit of kit Victron make.

Anyone else had similar? Curious whether the engine bay versus habitation space mounting makes a significant difference in people's real-world experience — I've seen conflicting things in the Victron community forums about this.

Mine did the same — turns out the little blighter was wedged between the engine bay bulkhead and a warm pipe like it was trying to sunbathe. 🌞

Moved it six inches and it's been rock solid ever since.

Check your mounting position before diving into settings — Victron's thermal derating kicks in well before it actually shuts down, so you might also notice sluggish charge rates as an early warning sign.

The Victron Connect app will show you the temperature history if you dig into the trends, which saved me a fortune in head-scratching time.

@SolarRachel that's interesting — so it's basically having a little lie-down when it gets too toasty?

Mine's on the narrowboat and I've been paranoid about exactly this. Can I ask — did you just relocate the unit somewhere cooler, or is there a way to dethrone the thermal protection settings in the Victron Connect app? I've had a poke around in there and couldn't find anything obvious.

Also wondering if a small 12v fan blowing across it would buy enough headroom to keep it happy, or whether that's just sticking a plaster on a broken leg situation. The engine bay on a 57-footer gets absolutely tropical in summer and I'd rather not keep losing charging when I'm cruising and actually need the alternator topping up the leisure bank.

@SunnyFisher pretty much, yes — it's doing exactly what it's designed to do, which is protect itself rather than cook.

Worth pulling up the VictronConnect app whilst it's happening. The Orion-Tr Smart logs its internal temperature, so you can see precisely when it's throttling back versus a genuine fault. There's a difference between thermal protection (working as intended) and thermal shutdown (something's actually wrong with placement or airflow).

Mine's mounted on the habitation side of the bulkhead in my Caddy, with about 50mm clearance all round. Never had a cutout since. The manual specifies a maximum ambient of 40°C — engine bays can easily exceed that when you're sat in traffic on a warm day.

If you can't relocate it, a small heatsink bracket makes a surprising difference.

@SolarRachel nailed it, and @CaddyCamper's right that it's working as intended — frustrating as that feels when you're trying to charge on a long motorway run.

Worth checking the actual cutout temperature in the VictronConnect app — the Orion logs it, so you can see exactly when and how hot it's getting. Mine on the narrowboat was hitting 65°C tucked behind the engine panel.

Simple fix that sorted mine: a small 12V computer fan blowing across it, wired to a thermal switch set around 40°C. Cost me about £8 from Amazon. Alternatively, relocate it entirely — somewhere with decent airflow away from anything warm. The Orion doesn't care where it lives as long as it can breathe.

Also worth double-checking your cable sizing — undersized cables add resistance, which adds heat, which compounds the problem.

Had this exact grief in my motorhome last year. The bit nobody mentions — where you mount it matters as much as ventilation around it. Mine was tucked against a bulkhead with barely 20mm clearance on one side, running fine in winter, throwing a fit every summer run.

Moved it to a proper vented enclosure with at least 50mm clearance all round and the problem basically vanished.

Also worth checking: is your engine bay heat actually conducting into the mounting surface? Metal bracket bolted to something warm = the unit's already fighting an uphill battle before it even starts working.

@MasterSolar is right that it's doing its job, but that doesn't mean you're stuck with it cutting out — usually solvable without spending anything.
