Mine did exactly this in the shepherd's hut van I was running last summer — turned out the Victron was mounted too close to the engine bay bulkhead and was hitting its thermal shutdown faster than my morning coffee.
A few things worth checking:
- Ventilation around the unit — Victron's own docs say it needs decent airflow, and "decent" apparently doesn't mean "wedged behind a hot firewall"
- Input voltage dropping under load — when the engine warms up, alternator output can do funny things, and if voltage dips below the Orion's threshold it'll cut out looking very much like a thermal issue
- Firmware — boring answer but the Victron Connect app updates have sorted some odd cut-out behaviour for people on older firmware
Worth grabbing a Victron SmartShunt or even just a cheap Bluetooth voltmeter on the input side so you can actually see what the voltage is doing when it cuts — flying blind on this stuff is maddening.
I'd also check the engine temperature sensor isn't feeding into anything weird if you've got a more modern vehicle with CAN bus doing clever things.
Has anyone else found the 30A variant more temperamental than the 12A? I've got a sneaking suspicion the smaller ones run cooler and just get away with rougher installs — curious if others have noticed the same.
