Victron Orion 30A keeps cutting out when engine's warm — anyone else had this?

Mine did exactly this in the shepherd's hut van I was running last summer — turned out the Victron was mounted too close to the engine bay bulkhead and was hitting its thermal shutdown faster than my morning coffee.

A few things worth checking:

  • Ventilation around the unit — Victron's own docs say it needs decent airflow, and "decent" apparently doesn't mean "wedged behind a hot firewall"
  • Input voltage dropping under load — when the engine warms up, alternator output can do funny things, and if voltage dips below the Orion's threshold it'll cut out looking very much like a thermal issue
  • Firmware — boring answer but the Victron Connect app updates have sorted some odd cut-out behaviour for people on older firmware

Worth grabbing a Victron SmartShunt or even just a cheap Bluetooth voltmeter on the input side so you can actually see what the voltage is doing when it cuts — flying blind on this stuff is maddening.

I'd also check the engine temperature sensor isn't feeding into anything weird if you've got a more modern vehicle with CAN bus doing clever things.

Has anyone else found the 30A variant more temperamental than the 12A? I've got a sneaking suspicion the smaller ones run cooler and just get away with rougher installs — curious if others have noticed the same.

@BatteryPaula yeah thermal shutdown is the obvious culprit but worth checking the input voltage too. When engine's warm and alternator's working hard, voltage can sag enough to trigger undervoltage cutoff rather than thermal — looks identical from the outside.

Grab the VictronConnect app and check the history tab. It'll tell you exactly why it cut out. Thermal and undervoltage show as different fault codes.

Mine's mounted in the cabin itself with a short cable run through the bulkhead — pain to route but keeps it cool. 30A unit runs warm enough as it is without baking it near an engine.

@BatteryPaula mine throttled back like a sulking teenager until I zip-tied a 40mm fan directly onto the Orion — runs cool as a cucumber now even parked in full sun.

@BatteryPaula had almost identical symptoms on my static caravan setup — Orion 30A isolated, mounted in a fairly enclosed timber-framed compartment. What nobody mentioned yet: check your input cable sizing. Under-spec'd cable causes voltage drop under load, which combined with the alternator's warm-output characteristics can push the Orion into a weird fault loop that looks like thermal shutdown but isn't quite.

Stuck a proper clamp meter on mine and was seeing 11.8V at the unit while the alternator was doing 14.2V at source — horrible cable run, too many joins.

Also worth pulling the VictronConnect history logs — the Orion records the actual shutdown reason. Thermal vs input undervoltage are logged separately and it'll tell you immediately which rabbit hole you're actually in rather than guessing.

@BatteryPaula worth checking your input voltage threshold as well as the thermal side — a warm alternator under load can sometimes drop just enough that the Orion hits its low-input cutoff, especially on older vehicles with iffy charging systems. I had a similar head-scratcher on my motorhome last year; turned out my starter battery terminals were slightly corroded, so voltage drop under load was tipping the Orion over the edge. Cleaned everything up with proper copper grease and it sorted itself immediately.

Grab a cheap multimeter and monitor the input voltage at the Orion itself (not just at the battery) while the engine's warm and the unit's running. If you're seeing anything below about 12.8V at the input terminals, that's your culprit rather than heat.

@BatteryPaula worth mentioning the Orion's protection history in the Victron Connect app — if you haven't checked it already, it logs exactly why it's been shutting down, whether that's thermal, undervoltage, or something else entirely. Saved me a fair bit of head-scratching on my narrowboat install. If it's showing repeated thermal events you've got your answer, but if it's logging input voltage warnings instead that ties in with what @ExTrucker73 is saying about the alternator drooping under load. Also double-check your wiring gauge on the input side — undersized cable adds resistance and can cause voltage drop that looks like an alternator problem but isn't.
