Victron Orion 30A keeps dropping out on long motorway runs — anyone else had this?

Had exactly this on my narrowboat last summer — drove me mad for weeks before I figured it out.

The Orion-Tr Smart 30A has a thermal protection threshold that kicks in surprisingly early if airflow is restricted. Mine was mounted in a semi-enclosed battery compartment and it was cutting out after about 40 minutes on a run. Moved it to a spot with better ventilation and the dropouts basically stopped overnight.

A few things worth checking:

  • Input voltage sag — if your alternator is struggling under load, the Orion can interpret low voltage as a fault condition and shut down
  • Engine bay temps — on motorway runs the underbonnet heat builds up considerably, especially in summer
  • Firmware — there was a version a while back that had overly aggressive protection logic; updating via the VictronConnect app sorted a few people out on here

Is yours the isolated or non-isolated version? The isolated 30A does run warmer in my experience. Also worth connecting it to VictronConnect via Bluetooth mid-journey (passenger can do it) and checking the history tab — it logs the reason for shutdown which is genuinely useful rather than just guessing.

What vehicle is this on? Motorhome, van? And where exactly is the unit mounted? That'll probably narrow it down pretty quickly.

@ExpertConvert yes, thermal cutout was exactly my issue too on the boat — though I'd add that mounting orientation is often the overlooked culprit alongside airflow.

Victron's own documentation specifies the Orion-Tr Smart should be mounted with the fins vertical, but I've seen so many installs where it's been shoved horizontally in a locker. Natural convection is essentially killed that way.

Also worth checking:

  • Input voltage sag under load — if your alternator's dropping below ~13.2V the unit can behave erratically
  • Whether you've got the engine detection threshold set sensibly in VictronConnect (default can be fussy)
  • Ambient temp inside your engine bay — mine peaked at 52°C last July, which doesn't leave much headroom before protection kicks in

Mine sorted itself once I relocated it outside the engine compartment entirely and added a small 12V fan on a thermal switch. Night and day difference.

Has anyone actually checked whether it's the thermal cutout specifically or just the unit detecting a voltage drop on the alternator side and shutting down to protect itself? Mine on the static caravan setup (running off a vehicle during power cuts) kept dropping and I was convinced it was heat-related, turned out the input voltage was sagging below threshold under load.

Worth logging it with the Victron Connect app — it'll tell you exactly why it tripped. Don't just assume thermal without the data.

Also @ExpertConvert what's your cable run length to the unit? Undersized or overly long cabling causing resistance could be masking itself as a different fault entirely.

@BayTim raises a really valid point that gets overlooked. I spent an embarrassing amount of time chasing thermals on my van build before realising the Orion was actually seeing the starter battery voltage sag under load — motorway driving, alternator working hard, voltage fluctuating enough to confuse the unit's input threshold.

Worth pulling the VictronConnect app history logs whilst driving — the Orion records exactly why it shut down. Thermal events show differently to undervoltage events in the data. Took me five minutes to diagnose what weeks of forum-reading hadn't solved.

If it is voltage-related, check your cable run from alternator to Orion input. I'd dropped to 10AWG on one section without thinking — that resistance under 30A load was enough to pull the input voltage below the cutout threshold on long pulls up inclines.

@BayTim @MarinePhil — right, so if it's voltage drop on the alternator side, what's the actual fix? Better cable run? I've got a Sprinter-based motorhome and the run from the starter battery terminals to where the Orion sits is probably longer than ideal. Already running 10mm² which I thought was sufficient but maybe not. Does undersizing the cable explain why it only drops out on long runs rather than short ones — something to do with the alternator output changing once it's warm and the battery's taken a charge? Genuinely asking because I've been blaming the unit itself and nearly sent it back.
