Victron Orion 30A keeps dropping out on long motorway runs — anyone else?

Had almost the exact same issue on my van build last summer. Long runs on the A1 and it would drop out after about 45 minutes, then come back after 10-15 minutes. Classic thermal cutout behaviour.

What fixed it for me was repositioning the unit. I'd originally mounted it in a sealed compartment under the passenger seat — basically no airflow at all. Moved it to the back of the van on the bulkhead with a small 12v fan triggered by a temperature probe, and the drop-outs stopped entirely.

A few things worth checking:

  • Ambient temperature in your mounting location — these units really do need breathing room
  • Input voltage under load — if your alternator voltage is sagging, the Orion might be hitting its lower threshold and disconnecting
  • Firmware — there was a version a while back that had some quirks with the engine-running detection on certain vehicles

Also worth connecting it up to VictronConnect if you haven't already. The history tab shows the reason for each disconnect, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.

What vehicle are you running it in? Some of the newer Euro 6 vans with smart alternators behave oddly and people sometimes need to use the ignition input rather than relying on voltage detection. Had a mate with a '21 Transit who chased this for weeks before figuring that out.

Interested to hear if others have seen this — wondering if it's more common on certain batches or installs.

@JH_Power worth checking your ventilation around the unit — the Orion-Tr Smart runs warm anyway but on a long motorway run with the engine bay heat soaking through into the cab, it compounds quickly.

On my narrowboat install I actually ended up mounting mine to an aluminium plate bolted directly to the hull side, effectively using the steel as a heatsink. Dropped the thermal trips almost completely.

Also worth pulling the VictronConnect logs after a trip — the Orion records its temperature history so you can see exactly what it hit before cutout rather than guessing. Might also be worth checking your wire gauge on the input side; voltage sag under load generates heat at the unit too.

The 45-minute window does sound very consistent with thermal limits rather than anything electrical, mind.

Ran into this exact scenario on my van build through Scotland last year — long stretches of the A9 and same story, 40-odd minutes then dropout.

Turned out my mounting position was the culprit. I'd tucked the Orion behind a panel thinking it was tidy, but it was essentially in a dead air pocket. Moved it to a spot with actual airflow and the problem vanished completely.

One thing worth adding beyond what @PanelEwan mentioned — check your input voltage under load too. If your alternator is struggling and voltage sags, the Orion can behave oddly. Grabbed a cheap voltage logger from Amazon and left it running for a full motorway stint. Told me everything I needed to know about what was actually happening during those runs.

Really useful thread this. One thing worth adding that I don't think has been mentioned yet — check your input voltage is staying stable during those long runs. If your alternator voltage drops slightly under sustained load (heating, lights, etc.), the Orion can interpret it as a low-voltage condition and shut down rather than it being purely thermal. Worth logging the input side with a Victron BMV or even just a cheap Bluetooth monitor whilst driving. @JH_Power did you notice whether it was cutting out more in traffic or on open road? That might help narrow it down between heat versus voltage sag.

Had this exact drama on my narrowboat — Orion-Tr Smart mounted in a poorly ventilated cabinet like an idiot. The unit was technically within spec on paper, but the ambient temperature inside that enclosure was cooking it alive on warm days.

Two things nobody's mentioned yet:

  1. Check the Victron Connect app thermal data — it logs the actual cutout temperature, so you can confirm it's thermal rather than something else like alternator voltage sag
  2. Mounting orientation matters — Victron specifically recommend the fins vertical for passive convection. Mounted mine horizontally and it ran noticeably hotter

@T6Dream makes a fair point on input voltage too — a tired alternator struggling at motorway revs can look fine at idle but sag badly under load, which confuses the unit something rotten.

Repositioned mine with a 50mm clearance gap on all sides. Problem solved entirely.
