Had this exact issue last winter with my Orion-Tr Smart 30A. Turned out my alternator voltage was dropping slightly under load on long runs — the Orion was seeing it as a "weak" source and throttling back, then convincing itself the battery was fuller than it was.

Few things worth checking:

  • Cable sizing from alternator to Orion input — even a slight voltage drop across undersized cable can confuse it
  • Battery sense — are you using the Victron smart network for accurate voltage readings, or is it just relying on the output terminals?
  • Absorption voltage setting — worth double-checking this matches your battery spec. I dropped mine slightly on Fogstar lithium and it behaved much better

Also worth looking at the charge algorithm settings in the VictronConnect app. There's a "fixed" vs "adaptive" mode that can make a difference depending on your usage pattern. Adaptive is clever but sometimes too clever if your battery starts each run at a slightly different state of charge.

What battery chemistry are you running? LiFePO4 or lead-acid changes things considerably. And do you have a BMS communicating back to the Orion, or is it operating blind?

Keen to hear what others have found — I've seen a few threads elsewhere suggesting the 30A can be a bit twitchy compared to the 18A on certain alternator setups, but I've not been able to replicate it consistently enough to be sure if it's firmware or just installation variables.

Has anyone tried the latest firmware update? There were some charge curve tweaks in a recent release that might be relevant here.

Good shout @CrafterSolar. Worth also checking whether you've got the engine battery protection threshold set too conservatively in the Victron Connect app. I had mine set at 13.2V which was causing premature float kicks on my 140A alternator — dropped it to 12.8V and the issue largely disappeared on longer runs.

Also worth logging the input voltage over a full journey using the app's history feature. You might find the voltage dip is happening specifically under heavy electrical load — fans, heated seats, headlights all running simultaneously can pull the alternator voltage down enough to confuse the Orion into thinking the source is struggling. A decent set of heavy gauge cables between alternator and Orion input helps too if yours are undersized.

@CrafterSolar nailed the alternator drop issue, but also check your input current limit in VictronConnect — if it's set too low, the Orion throttles itself right down and interprets the resulting voltage recovery as "battery full" like a confused labrador thinking it's won.

Also worth enabling adaptive absorption if you haven't — pairs nicely with a long motorway run since it bases absorption time on how depleted your Fogstar leisure bank actually was.

One often-missed culprit: cable voltage drop between alternator and Orion input. Anything over ~0.4V drop and the unit's getting false readings. Stick a multimeter on it whilst moving — easier said than done, mind — or just upsize the cable preemptively to 16mm² and sleep soundly.

@CrafterSolar @Paddy_2634 both good points already covered — one thing nobody's mentioned yet: check your cable run length from alternator to Orion input. Had this exact drama on my narrowboat, long undersized cable was causing enough voltage drop that the Orion thought the alternator was struggling. Bumped up to 10mm² and the problem vanished overnight.

Also worth enabling the algorithm guard in VictronConnect if you haven't — stops it bailing into float prematurely when voltage wobbles.

Boring answer but it's usually the cables 😅

@GrumpySparky raises something really important with cable runs — I'd add that it's worth double-checking your actual alternator output voltage under load using a decent multimeter at the Orion input terminals, not just at the battery. Had a similar situation on mine where everything looked fine at the starter battery but there was a notable drop by the time it reached the DC-DC due to a dodgy crimp I'd missed.

Also worth enabling the adaptive mode in VictronConnect if you haven't — it lets the Orion be a bit more tolerant of fluctuating input. Made a noticeable difference on my setup running through the Welsh valleys where the alternator load varies a lot on climbs.
