Victron Orion XS keeps dropping out on long drives — anyone else had this?

Been having exactly this with mine on the narrowboat — fitted an Orion XS 50A about three months ago and on longer cruising days (4+ hours on the engine) it'll drop out maybe two or three times. Cuts out, then recovers after a minute or so.

I've been going back and forth trying to work out the cause. A few things I've checked or tried:

  • Alternator output voltage — wondering if it's dipping under load and triggering the low input cutoff
  • Temperature — the unit gets pretty warm in the engine bay, though I've not seen it hit thermal shutdown in the Victron Connect app
  • Wiring — redid my connections thinking it might be a voltage drop issue on the input side

Still not entirely resolved but it's less frequent since I improved the cabling. I'm running it off a Beta Marine 43hp engine with a fairly old standard alternator, so I do wonder whether the alternator's just not keeping up properly.

Has anyone used the input current limit setting to ease the load on an older alternator? I dropped mine to 30A to see if that helps long-term.

Also curious — is anyone else running the XS on a boat rather than a vehicle? I wonder if the engine bay environment (heat, vibration, humidity) is a factor compared to a van install.

Would be useful to know if this is a widespread firmware issue or something specific to my setup. Anyone checked whether the latest firmware addressed any stability problems?

@PaddyDixon had almost the exact same with mine on the static — turned out to be thermal shutdown. The XS runs hot if airflow's restricted. Where have you mounted yours?

Victron's own guidance says it needs proper ventilation but people still shove them in cable runs with no breathing room and then wonder why it's cutting out after sustained load.

Worth checking the VictronConnect app during a run if you can — it'll log the fault codes and tell you whether it's actually thermal, input undervoltage, or something else entirely. Don't just guess at it.

Also — is your alternator a smart/variable voltage unit? Some of the newer Euro 6 narrowboat engines have them and the Orion can have a proper paddy with irregular input voltage. That's a separate issue altogether but worth ruling out.

@PaddyDixon worth checking your input voltage during those dropouts — on the narrowboat I found my alternator voltage was sagging on longer runs once the batteries got closer to full and the alternator load dropped off. The Orion XS can be a bit fussy about that lower threshold.

Also — are you running it in standalone or have you got it linked to a Cerbo/GX device? Mine behaved oddly until I updated the firmware via VictronConnect. There was a known bug a while back causing spurious disconnects.

If @DODGuy's thermal angle doesn't pan out, I'd pull the voltage logs from the app during a cruise and see if you're dipping below the input lockout threshold momentarily. Diesel engines with older alternators can have more voltage noise than you'd expect.

@PaddyDixon mine did something similar in the garden office setup — turned out the VE.Direct cable was picking up interference from a nearby inverter and sending the Orion into a sulk mid-session. Worth checking the Victron Connect history after a dropout; it logs the fault reason and saves you playing whack-a-mole with random fixes. 🔧

Had this on my motorhome with an earlier Orion Smart (not the XS, but similar behaviour). Worth checking whether the dropouts correlate with your engine revs dropping — at idle or low revs some alternators sag enough to trigger the XS's low-input cutoff.

The XS has a configurable input voltage threshold in VictronConnect — what's yours set to? Default can be a bit aggressive depending on your alternator. Also, are you running it in engine-running detection mode? If it's relying on voltage sensing to detect the engine rather than a dedicated D+ wire, marginal voltage could confuse it.

@DODGuy's thermal point is worth ruling out too — what's the ambient like in your engine bay? On narrowboats they can get properly stuffy in summer.

Really interesting thread — I've got an Orion XS on my narrowboat too and haven't had the dropout issue yet, but now I'm properly paranoid about it!

@PaddyDixon when yours cuts out, does it recover on its own or do you have to manually reset it? And are you able to see the fault in VictronConnect history afterwards? I know the XS logs absorption/bulk cycles but I'm not sure how much dropout detail it captures.

Also — what's your battery bank setup on the other end? I'm running Fogstar Drift 200Ah LiFePO4 and wondering whether the BMS doing any cell balancing could cause a momentary load spike that confuses the Orion's input sensing.

Tempted to stick a small capacitor across the input terminals as a buffer — has anyone actually tried that or is that just mad?
