Had exactly this last winter with my 100Ah Victron Smart Lithium in the garden office. Temps dropped to around -4°C overnight and the battery just refused to accept a charge in the morning. The BMS had done its job correctly — lithium genuinely shouldn't be charged below 5°C or you risk plating the cells — but it caught me off guard the first time it happened.
The fix that worked for me was adding a Victron Battery Protect on the load side configured to keep a small heating mat running off the battery just long enough to bring the internal temp up. Bit of a faff to set up but it's been solid since.
Worth checking a few things:
- What's the actual cell temperature reading in the VictronConnect app? Sometimes the ambient vs cell temp difference is surprising
- Is your SmartSolar MPPT talking to the battery via the VE.Smart network? That integration gives the MPPT the low-temp cutoff signal directly
- Check for any firmware updates — Victron pushed some BMS-related fixes last year
The alternative some people go for is a self-heating LiFePO4 like the Fogstar Drift range, which handles low temps natively. Might be worth considering if you're in a particularly exposed location.
What's your setup — is the battery inside an insulated space or fully exposed? That makes a massive difference. Mine's under a bench in the office which helps retain some heat. Anyone else found a more elegant solution than a heating mat?
