Victron Smart Lithium playing up after a cold snap — anyone else had this?

Had exactly this last winter with my 100Ah Victron Smart Lithium in the garden office. Temps dropped to around -4°C overnight and the battery just refused to accept a charge in the morning. The BMS had done its job correctly — lithium genuinely shouldn't be charged below 5°C or you risk plating the cells — but it caught me off guard the first time it happened.

The fix that worked for me was adding a Victron Battery Protect on the load side configured to keep a small heating mat running off the battery just long enough to bring the internal temp up. Bit of a faff to set up but it's been solid since.

Worth checking a few things:

  • What's the actual cell temperature reading in the VictronConnect app? Sometimes the ambient vs cell temp difference is surprising
  • Is your SmartSolar MPPT talking to the battery via the VE.Smart network? That integration gives the MPPT the low-temp cutoff signal directly
  • Check for any firmware updates — Victron pushed some BMS-related fixes last year

The alternative some people go for is a self-heating LiFePO4 like the Fogstar Drift range, which handles low temps natively. Might be worth considering if you're in a particularly exposed location.

What's your setup — is the battery inside an insulated space or fully exposed? That makes a massive difference. Mine's under a bench in the office which helps retain some heat. Anyone else found a more elegant solution than a heating mat?

@DanPhillips99 Classic low-temperature charge protection doing exactly what it should — Victron's Smart Lithium BMS blocks charging below around 5°C to prevent lithium plating on the cells, which can cause permanent capacity loss or worse.

What I did on my narrowboat last February when we had a proper cold snap: I've got a small 10W heat mat tucked alongside the battery bank, thermostatically controlled, kicks in around 3°C. Draws virtually nothing overnight and keeps the cells just warm enough that the BMS stays happy.

The Victron app should show you a "Low Temperature" alarm in the notifications history — worth checking to confirm that's actually what triggered it rather than something else.

If you're running a MPPT, you can also configure a low temperature cutoff in VictronConnect under the battery settings, giving you an extra layer of protection on the charge side.

Same issue hit my garden office setup last January. The BMS doing its job is all well and good, but practically it meant no usable power until mid-morning when temps crept back up.

What actually solved it for me was adding a small Victron Smart Battery Protect alongside a cheap immersion heater pad wired to keep the battery bay above 5°C overnight. Pulls minimal power but means the battery's ready to charge from first light.

Worth checking your Victron Connect app — there's a low-temp alarm threshold you can monitor. Mine was triggering around 3°C consistently before I sorted the insulation in the office cupboard where the battery lives.

Has anyone found a more elegant solution that doesn't involve running a heater constantly? Feels slightly counterproductive energy-wise.

Yeah this is the standard behaviour, and honestly it's correct — charging lithium below 0°C wrecks the cells long-term. Annoying in practice though, no argument there.

What sorted it for me at the shepherd's hut was fitting a self-heating battery. Fogstar Drift range has the internal heating built in — kicks in automatically before allowing charge. Pricier upfront but you stop fighting the BMS every cold morning.

Alternatively, if you're keeping the Victron, a small heating pad under the battery connected to a thermostat will bring it up to temp before your morning charge cycle starts. Just needs a sliver of power from the battery itself overnight — not ideal but workable.

Worth checking your Victron Connect app too — you can see exactly what temp the BMS cut out at, which helps diagnose whether insulation improvements alone would be enough.

@DanPhillips99 Worth knowing that the Victron Smart Lithium has a built-in self-heating workaround if you set things up correctly — if you've got a small resistive load keeping a trickle of discharge going overnight, the cells generate enough internal warmth to stay above the charge-inhibit threshold. In my motorhome I use a 10W resistor wired through a temperature-controlled relay, costs pennies to run.

Also check your VictronConnect app — the battery's Bluetooth will log exactly what temperature triggered the lockout, which helps you decide whether insulation alone would solve it. A decent layer of closed-cell foam around the battery housing made a noticeable difference to my overnight temperatures, effectively buying you another 3-4°C of margin before the BMS intervenes.

@SaltyHiker is absolutely right that the protection is correct behaviour — the goal is working with it rather than fighting it.

@ExFirefighter42 is on the right track but worth being precise — the Victron Smart Lithium's low-temp cutoff is at +5°C, not 0°C. So you'll see charge blocking well above freezing, which catches people out.

On my narrowboat I just run a small self-regulating heat mat under the battery bank, thermostatically controlled. Keeps cells above 10°C even in proper cold snaps. Cheap fix.

Also worth checking your Victron Connect app — the BMS logs temperature events, so you can confirm that's actually what triggered it rather than something else. People often assume cold is the culprit when there's another fault lurking.

If you're on a permanent install like a garden office, a simple insulated enclosure makes a massive difference before you even touch heating solutions.
