Running a 12V compressor fridge on my shepherd's hut has taught me a brutal lesson — solar alone is never quite enough when a proper British grey sky rolls in for three days straight.
My setup pairs a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/20 with a Blue Smart IP22 15A shore charger, and getting them to play nicely together took a bit of head-scratching. The key thing I discovered is letting the VictronConnect app do the heavy lifting — once both devices are set to the same charge profile and battery type (I'm running Fogstar Drift LiFePO4), they essentially hand off to each other without drama.
What I would flag for anyone considering this combination:
- The Blue Smart will assert priority over the MPPT when mains is connected, which is exactly what you want
- Make sure your BMS current limits are respected — 15A from the charger plus whatever the panels push can stack up
- If you're on a boat or hut with a generator rather than mains hookup, an AutoTransformer or a decent inverter-charger might be a cleaner single-unit solution
The real question I keep coming back to is whether a Multiplus-II wouldn't just solve the whole thing in one box — combine the inverter, MPPT, and mains charging, done. Overkill for some, but not necessarily for a fridge running year-round.
Anyone else running this dual-source setup through a proper UK winter? Curious whether others have found the handoff between solar and mains as seamless as I have, or whether there are edge cases I haven't hit yet.
