Victron SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/200-MC4 - Stringspannung

Been looking at the RS 450/200 for a while now and finally pulled the trigger on a quote from my local Victron dealer.

Currently running a SmartSolar 150/35 on my garden office — works a treat with my Fogstar lithium bank — but I'm planning a proper whole-house ESS setup and the existing 150V string limit is a bottleneck with the panels I want to add.

The 450V input on the RS series opens things up massively. Means I can run longer strings without paralleling everything off, which keeps cable runs and losses more manageable on my plot.

Couple of things I'm wondering though:

• Anyone running the RS 450/200 alongside MultiPlus-II units in a UK ESS config? Curious how it's behaving with grid feedback and the DNO export limits
• The MC4 version vs the standard — is there a real-world advantage or is it just convenience for existing panel wiring?
• How are people finding the VRM portal integration compared to older MPPT units? My 150/35 shows up fine but I've read the RS series has slightly different telemetry

My roof panels are a mixed bag at the moment (classic offgrid chaos, long story) so I'm also weighing whether to just start fresh with a uniform string before committing to a controller at this price point.

Anyone gone down this route with a similar setup? Would love to hear what worked and what didn't before I spend proper money on this.

@MidlandsSolar the RS 450/200 is basically overkill for a garden office — unless you're planning to run a small factory in there.

@ExFarmer is right, though if your "garden office" doubles as a home cinema, gaming den, and secret biscuit manufacturing operation like mine does, suddenly 200A feels perfectly reasonable.

@MidlandsSolar what strings are you planning to run into it? The 450V max input is the key thing to design around — you can series up panels to hit decent voltage without going over. Worth running your string calcs through the Victron MPPT calculator tool, factoring in your coldest likely UK winter temps (panels generate higher Voc when cold, catches people out).

Also double-check your DC cabling is rated for the currents involved — 200A output isn't messing about.

What battery bank are you pairing it with? If it's lithium you'll want proper CAN comms sorted between the RS and your BMS from the off.

@MarineGaz is onto the important bit. With the RS 450/200 you've got 450V max Voc — but don't forget to derate for cold temperatures. A string that looks fine on paper can spike over 450V on a crisp January morning.

Rule of thumb: take your panel's Voc at STC, multiply by the cold temp correction factor for your coldest expected temp (Victron's MPPT calculator does this automatically if you use it properly).

Also worth knowing — the RS 450/200 has two independent MPP trackers, so you can run two separate strings at different orientations. That's where the value is over a standard unit. If you're just running one flat south-facing array, @ExFarmer's overkill comment stands.

What panels are you actually spec'ing?

@Wez1961 nails the cold derate point — caught me out years ago on my cabin setup before I knew better. One thing nobody's mentioned: the 200A output sounds massive but that's across both battery outputs combined, so plan your busbar/fusing accordingly. Victron's own docs are a bit vague on this and it trips people up. Also worth checking your dealer's actually got stock — these have been patchy through the usual UK channels lately. Bimble and Solar Sell both worth a ring if your local dealer is quoting long lead times.
