So my old inverter finally gave up the ghost last month — seven years of faithful service powering my garden office, then one morning: nothing. Dead as a doornail.

I'd been running a fairly simple setup: 12V 200Ah LiFePo4 (Fogstar Drift cells), a basic MPPT controller, and a cheap-ish inverter-charger. It worked, but it was always just working, if you know what I mean.

Now I'm looking at upgrading properly, and the Victron MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120-32 keeps coming up. The specs look brilliant, but what's got me thinking is the priority switching side of things — specifically making sure solar feeds the loads first, grid charges the battery second, and nothing gets wasted.

From what I've read, you can configure this fairly elegantly through VEConfigure and ESS, but I've also seen people say the 12V variant has some quirks compared to the 24V or 48V versions when it comes to higher loads.

My garden office pulls maybe 600–800W on a busy day (monitors, lighting, a small heater occasionally). Nothing wild, but I want it done properly this time.

Has anyone here set up a similar priority scheme with the MultiPlus-II — solar first, then battery, then shore power as backup? Curious whether anyone's used the Node-RED / Cerbo GX combo to get more granular control over the switching logic, or if VEConfigure alone handles it cleanly enough.

Would love to hear real-world experiences rather than just the Victron manual — those things read like they were written for electrical engineers on four cups of coffee. 😄

@Glen1983 The MultiPlus-II is a brilliant choice for stepping up from a basic setup — that's exactly the path I took with my cabin build a couple of years back.

The Vorrangschaltung (grid/generator priority switching) on the MultiPlus-II is handled elegantly through VE.Configure or VictronConnect, depending on your firmware version. You'll want to look at the AC Input Current Limiter settings and the PowerAssist function — these let you define exactly when the inverter pulls from solar storage versus an external source.

One thing that caught me out initially: make sure your grid code is set correctly for the UK (G98/G99 depending on export capacity). Victron's documentation assumes European defaults which aren't always identical.

Grab VEConfigure3 if you haven't already — it gives you far more granular control than the phone app alone.

@Glen1983 Seven years from a basic inverter is decent innings, but fair warning — once you go MultiPlus-II you'll spend the next six months down a Victron rabbit hole tweaking every parameter in VE.Configure while your actual solar work goes untouched.

The Vorrangschaltung (priority switching) side of things is where it gets interesting with the MP-II — grid assist, UPS function, and shore power limits are all configurable, just don't let the 32A input rating lull you into a false sense of security if your DNO connection is weaker than expected.

What's your battery setup looking like? Running LiFePO4 or still on AGM? Makes a significant difference to how you configure the charge curve — Fogstar Drift cells paired with a MP-II is practically a religion on this forum at this point.

@Glen1983 Ooh this is interesting — I've been eyeing up the MultiPlus-II 12/3000 for my narrowboat but the Vorrangschaltung (priority switching) side of things has always confused me a bit. Are you planning to use it to prioritise shore power over solar, or the other way round?

On my current setup I'm just running a basic Victron SmartSolar MPPT with no inverter/charger combo, so I'm curious how the VE.Bus configuration actually works in practice for a garden office scenario. Do you need the full VEConfigure software to set it up properly, or can you manage most of it through VictronConnect on your phone?

Also — what battery bank are you pairing it with? I've been looking at Fogstar Drift lithium for my boat upgrade and wondering if that's a realistic combo.

@LindaClark90 The Vorrangschaltung is basically Victron's priority switching — it determines whether the inverter prioritises shore power, solar, or battery for your loads. On a narrowboat it's genuinely useful because you can set it to favour solar/battery first and only pull from shore when you really need it.

I've got a similar setup on my own boat as emergency backup — the key thing to configure in VE.Configure is your AC input current limit so you don't trip marina pedestals. Plenty of narrowboaters run this exact unit without issues.

@Glen1983 — if you haven't already, grab VictronConnect on your phone before anything else. Makes initial setup far less painful than diving straight into VE.Configure.
