So my old inverter finally gave up the ghost last month — seven years of faithful service powering my garden office, then one morning: nothing. Dead as a doornail.
I'd been running a fairly simple setup: 12V 200Ah LiFePo4 (Fogstar Drift cells), a basic MPPT controller, and a cheap-ish inverter-charger. It worked, but it was always just working, if you know what I mean.
Now I'm looking at upgrading properly, and the Victron MultiPlus-II 12/3000/120-32 keeps coming up. The specs look brilliant, but what's got me thinking is the priority switching side of things — specifically making sure solar feeds the loads first, grid charges the battery second, and nothing gets wasted.
From what I've read, you can configure this fairly elegantly through VEConfigure and ESS, but I've also seen people say the 12V variant has some quirks compared to the 24V or 48V versions when it comes to higher loads.
My garden office pulls maybe 600–800W on a busy day (monitors, lighting, a small heater occasionally). Nothing wild, but I want it done properly this time.
Has anyone here set up a similar priority scheme with the MultiPlus-II — solar first, then battery, then shore power as backup? Curious whether anyone's used the Node-RED / Cerbo GX combo to get more granular control over the switching logic, or if VEConfigure alone handles it cleanly enough.
Would love to hear real-world experiences rather than just the Victron manual — those things read like they were written for electrical engineers on four cups of coffee. 😄
