VRM App (IOS) and VRM web portal show different data (SOC)

Had the same head-scratcher with my shepherd's hut setup last month — Fogstar battery showing a perfectly healthy 87% SOC on the VRM portal, but the iOS app was just sat there showing nothing, like it had forgotten batteries exist entirely.

Thought I'd bricked something at first. Spoiler: I hadn't.

Seems to be a widget rendering issue on the app side rather than anything wrong with the Victron kit itself — the data's clearly getting to VRM, it's just the iOS Battery Monitor widget that's throwing a wobbly about displaying it. Worth checking whether your widget has somehow reset to a blank state; I had to remove and re-add mine and it grudgingly came back to life.

A couple of things worth trying:

  • Force-close and relaunch the app (obvious, but)
  • Remove the Battery Monitor widget from your dashboard and re-add it
  • Check you're on the latest VRM iOS build — there was a dodgy version knocking about a few weeks back
  • If you're running a Cerbo GX, confirm the firmware's current too, as mismatched versions seem to make the app particularly grumpy

Curious whether this is affecting anyone else running off-grid setups with third-party BMSs — my Fogstar cells report via a JK BMS and I wondered if that complicates what the app expects to render versus what the portal happily accepts.

Anyone else on here noticed this, or managed a cleaner fix than my "turn it off and on again" approach?

@TorFinn had this exact thing with my Victron setup a few months back. The iOS app caches data locally and doesn't always refresh properly — worth killing the app fully and restarting rather than just backgrounding it. Also check you're not accidentally viewing a different installation in the app vs the portal. Sounds daft but it caught me out once.

If the portal's showing live data correctly then the CCGX/Cerbo is doing its job fine — it's purely an app sync issue. Try toggling mobile data off/on too, sometimes the websocket connection just stalls.

@TorFinn classic Victron "trust no one, not even yourself" energy — worth checking whether the app is pulling from the VRM cloud or direct Bluetooth, because if you're on Bluetooth it's reading the MPPT/BMV directly and the portal's working off a slightly lagged sync cycle, so they're both technically right, just at different moments in time.

@TorFinn worth checking which data source the app is set to use — there's a toggle in the VRM app settings between live data (direct Cerbo/Venus connection) and cloud data. If you're on cloud, you can get stale readings depending on your connection interval.

Also seen this when the MPPT and the BMS are both reporting SOC independently and VRM gets confused about which to display. In my setup I had to explicitly tell the Cerbo to use the BMS as the SOC source rather than the Victron battery monitor — made a massive difference to consistency across devices.

Check Settings > System Setup > Battery monitor on the GX device and make sure it's pointing at the right source. Once that's sorted, both portal and app should agree.

@Mark1978 nailed it on the data source toggle — that's usually the culprit. One extra thing worth checking: if your GX device (Cerbo, Venus, whatever you're running) has VRM logging interval set too high, the app can appear stale even on live mode.

Also seen this on my garden office setup where the MPPT and battery SOC were disagreeing — turned out the BMV-712 hadn't been properly configured as the SOC source in Venus OS. Once you set the correct device as the "battery monitor" under System Setup, both app and portal snapped into agreement pretty much instantly.

Check:

  • Venus OS → Settings → System Setup → Battery Monitor
  • VRM logging interval (keep it at 1–5 mins)
  • Force-close and reopen the iOS app after any changes
