Saw this floating around and it got me thinking — there's a real lack of decent, technically accurate content out there specifically for UK off-grid users when it comes to home battery systems.

Most of what you find online is either aimed at American setups (different grid standards, different products) or it's marketing fluff that glosses over the stuff that actually matters — like how a Victron Multiplus handles grid-assist vs full off-grid, or the nuances of lithium BMS communication with a Cerbo GX.

I've been running a Victron-based system with Fogstar Drift cells for a couple of years now, primarily as emergency backup but increasingly as my main supply. The learning curve was steep, and I only managed it by trawling through forums like this one, the Victron Community site, and a lot of trial and error.

The point is — if Victron are looking for technical writers, I reckon there's a gap for someone who actually lives with these systems day-to-day rather than someone just reading the datasheets. Real-world stuff like:

  • How battery sizing calculations change in UK winter conditions
  • Compatibility quirks between different BMS brands and Victron kit
  • What "self-consumption" actually looks like on a typical UK household

Would anyone here consider putting themselves forward for something like that? And more broadly — what topics do you think are most poorly covered when it comes to home battery content? Genuinely curious what gaps others have found when researching their own setups.

Great point @Chalky12. The UK market has some genuinely specific considerations that generic content completely ignores — G98/G99 compliance, DNO notification requirements, the peculiarities of three-phase rural supplies, and how our climate affects battery temperature management compared to sunnier European installations.

Victron's documentation is thorough but very much written from a global perspective. There's real value in someone translating that into practical UK context — what settings actually make sense here, how to size systems for our frankly dismal winter irradiance, that sort of thing.

If anyone does take this on, I'd strongly suggest covering lithium vs LFP thermal considerations for unheated outbuildings, which is something I see causing real problems on here regularly. Happy to contribute technical review if needed.

@Chalky12 this resonates — I've lost count of the times I've followed a guide that assumes you're in California with 300 days of sun and a 48V lithium setup already sorted.

For static caravans and garden offices specifically, the sizing calculations are completely different from a typical house install. Nobody writes about that.

Things I'd genuinely want to see covered:

  • DNO notification requirements for larger systems (G98/G99 — massively under-discussed)
  • Victron's Cerbo GX paired with UK grid tariffs like Octopus Agile
  • Why Fogstar Drift cells behave differently in cold, damp British winters vs what the spec sheet claims

There's a real gap between "here's how lithium chemistry works" and "here's what actually happens when your garden office battery is sitting in 3°C and your Multiplus is throwing alarms."

Practical, UK-specific content would be genuinely useful rather than just repackaged American YouTube scripts.

@Chalky12 agree the UK-specific gap is real. A few things that'd actually be useful to cover:

  • G98/G99 compliance — nobody talks about this and it catches people out
  • Realistic solar yield figures for Scotland vs south England (not bloody Arizona averages)
  • How DNO export limitations affect battery sizing decisions
  • Fogstar vs imported cells — the warranty/support reality when things go wrong

From my own setup, the Victron ecosystem docs are decent but assume a level of grid infrastructure that doesn't match UK rural installs. 48V LiFePO4 with a Multiplus in an off-grid context behaves differently to a grid-tied home battery and that distinction gets lost constantly.

If someone's writing this properly, the EV charging angle matters too — V2H isn't legal here the same way it is elsewhere and that's worth flagging clearly.

The shepherd's hut build taught me this the hard way — every "beginner's guide" I found assumed year-round solar abundance and grid-tied setups that bear zero resemblance to what we're actually dealing with.

What's genuinely missing is honest content about battery sizing for UK winter. Not the peak-summer figures that look great on paper. When you're running a Victron MultiPlus through November and December on three or four usable hours of decent irradiance, the maths looks completely different to what most guides describe.

Emergency backup calculations are another blind spot — specifically what realistic autonomy looks like with a Fogstar Drift or similar LiFePO4 pack when the grid goes down mid-January and stays down.

@MarineGaz the G98/G99 point is crucial and almost nobody addresses it properly for smaller domestic installations.
