Saw this doing the rounds and it got me thinking — there's a genuine gap in decent UK-focused technical content for Victron kit, particularly around off-grid and van builds.
Most of the official documentation reads like it was written for marine electricians in the Netherlands (which, let's be honest, it probably was). When I was commissioning my van setup — Victron Multiplus-II, Fogstar Drift 200Ah LiFePO4, SmartSolar MPPT — I spent weeks cross-referencing Community posts, YouTube videos, and half-translated PDFs just to get the BMS comms working properly over VE.Bus.
The real question is: who actually knows this stuff well enough to write it clearly?
There's a handful of people on this forum alone who could produce better application notes than what Victron currently publishes for UK scenarios — things like:
- Split-phase vs single-phase considerations for UK mains integration
- G98/G99 compliance when exporting to the grid
- Correct fusing and cable sizing to BS 7671 rather than ABYC marine standards
If anyone here has genuinely considered freelance technical writing in the energy storage space, this seems worth exploring. The pay for that sort of contract work varies enormously, but the exposure and the access to pre-release hardware information could be worth it depending on your situation.
Has anyone here done any technical writing — paid or otherwise — for manufacturers or distributors? Curious whether it's actually viable alongside a day job, or whether the editorial constraints make it frustrating. I'd imagine Victron have strong opinions about how their products are presented.
