Saw this pop up and it got me thinking about something I've been wondering for my own setup anyway...

If you were running a mobile training unit or workshop van travelling across Europe — solar-powered obviously — what would the minimum viable system look like to keep it genuinely self-sufficient?

Context for why I'm asking: I've got a shepherd's hut with a fairly modest Victron/Fogstar setup that works a treat when it's stationary. But the idea of taking something similar on the road, crossing into France, Germany etc., throws up questions I haven't had to deal with before.

Things I'm not sure about:

  • Split-charge vs. DC-DC charging while driving — does the maths actually stack up for a working vehicle that's parked up for days at a time running equipment?
  • Shade tolerance — rooftop panels on a van that's parked under trees at some campsite in Bavaria aren't going to perform like my south-facing hut roof
  • Shore power compatibility across different countries — adaptors are one thing but what about voltage/frequency variation with sensitive kit?

The role in the original post sounds like whoever takes it on would need to be pretty clued up on this stuff themselves, not just a driver. Feels like a real off-grid challenge dressed up as a logistics job.

Anyone here actually run a mobile setup across multiple countries? Curious whether you stuck with Victron throughout or mixed in other kit to keep costs down on the vehicle side.

Interesting scenario @Gill1983 — this is actually pretty relevant to my own setup questions too.

The cross-border side worries me more than the solar bit. Victron kit seems to be the go-to for anything serious and mobile, partly because their support network is genuinely Europe-wide. That matters when you're broken down in rural France with a dead inverter.

A few things I'd want to nail down before committing to a mobile European setup:

  • Shore power compatibility — different campsite hookup standards across EU countries
  • Split charging while driving vs. solar top-up when stationary
  • Battery chemistry — LiFePO4 for the weight saving on a van that's already loaded with training kit

What sort of daily power draw are we talking for the training equipment? That'd completely change the panel/battery sizing conversation. Generator backup a possibility or strictly off-grid?

Cross-Europe solar is genuinely straightforward — Victron kit speaks every language and their VRM portal doesn't care which country you're parked in.

Biggest gotcha nobody mentions: keep your inverter's frequency switchable between 50Hz and 60Hz (though honestly everywhere in Europe is 50Hz so you're fine, it's if you ever do a US detour).

Practical must-haves for a travelling training rig:

  • Fogstar lithium for the storage — weight matters when you're moving constantly
  • Victron MPPT with Bluetooth so you can monitor from your phone in a Munich café
  • Shore power hookup for campsite nights when the sun's been useless (looking at you, November in Belgium)
  • A decent DC-DC charger to top up from the van's alternator on driving days

Regulatory headache is virtually nil within the EU/UK for self-contained 12/24V systems. 🚐

@MarineGeoff is right that Victron handles the technical side brilliantly — but living on the cut has taught me the human side matters just as much.

On the boat, I learned pretty quickly that no two mooring spots give you the same solar yield. A mobile training unit travelling from, say, grey Scottish highlands down to southern Spain faces that same inconsistency multiplied massively.

What sorted me out was logging actual production data obsessively for a season before committing to a final panel setup. I'd do the same for a roving European operation — run a pilot route first, note the worst-case days, then spec accordingly rather than guessing from averages.

A decent Fogstar LiFePO4 bank with enough capacity to bridge three overcast days has saved me more times than the solar itself. Buffer before panels, always.

Good points all round. One thing worth flagging from my cabin setup — battery choice matters more than people realise when you're moving constantly. Vibration kills cheaper cells faster than you'd expect.

For a rolling workshop van I'd lean toward Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 — they're built with some movement tolerance in mind and the UK support is solid if something goes wrong abroad.

Also worth thinking about: a Victron SmartSolar MPPT with load output lets you monitor everything remotely via VRM no matter which country you're parked in. I manage my static caravan setup from miles away with no issues.

The 240v/shore power side across different European standards is probably the trickiest bit nobody's mentioned yet — a decent isolation transformer would be on my list.
