Just found this place whilst researching solar setups for the caravan. Seems like exactly what I needed — proper focused community rather than wading through generic green energy forums.
Currently running a static setup with a modest 4kW array and Victron charge controller. It's been decent enough for winter months, but I'm seriously looking at expanding before next season. The real headache I'm facing is EV charging — got a plug-in hybrid that needs sorting, and every calculator I've used suggests I'd need double my current capacity. Wondering if anyone's tackled similar situations without going full grid-tie.
What's drawn me in most is seeing actual setups and costs discussed openly. Too many forums get clogged with theoretical chat or people flogging expensive solutions they don't actually use. The UK-specific angle is gold too — different climate, different grid situation, different regs.
Few questions I'm hoping to get into the community with:
- Battery sizing for seasonal storage (seems to be the bit most guides gloss over)
- Whether microinverters or string setups make more sense at my scale
- Real experience with installers who actually understand what they're doing
Reckon there's probably loads of people here with far more ambitious setups, but also keen to connect with others doing the pragmatic middle ground — wanting off-grid resilience without treating it like a lifestyle religion.
Looking forward to poking about the threads and hopefully contributing where I can.
