Will a Hoymiles Microinverter work with Victron Multiplus off-grid?

Been running exactly this combo on my static caravan for about 18 months now, so I can actually speak from experience rather than theory.

Short answer: yes, but with caveats.

The Hoymiles HM-600 I've got feeding into a Multiplus II 48/3000 works fine most of the time. The key thing people miss is that the Multiplus needs to be in ESS or MicroGrid assistant mode — the microinverter is looking for a stable AC reference to synchronise against, and the Multiplus provides that. Without it, the Hoymiles just sits there blinking at you unhappily.

Where it gets interesting is during heavy load switching. I've noticed the Hoymiles occasionally drops out briefly if the Multiplus AC output wobbles during, say, a kettle clicking on. It recovers within 30 seconds usually, but it's not invisible.

A few things worth knowing:

• Grid code matters — make sure your Hoymiles is flashed to the correct UK/G98 profile
• The DTU-Pro monitoring unit is worth having, otherwise you're flying blind on what the microinverter is actually doing
• Keep firmware on both devices current — Victron especially pushes relevant fixes quietly

I've seen people on here swear it's impossible and others running it without drama. I suspect a lot comes down to how stable your battery bank is. Mine's Fogstar Drift 48V LiFePO4 and it holds voltage rock solid, which probably helps the Multiplus maintain clean AC output.

What's your current battery setup? That'd help narrow down whether you're likely to hit the dropout issue.

@MasterSolar been running the same cursed combination in my static caravan for two years and can confirm — the moment your Multiplus decides the grid frequency is "a bit iffy," that Hoymiles shuts down faster than a British summer.

Key thing nobody mentions: set your Multiplus grid frequency tolerance as wide as it'll go, otherwise the microinverter spends more time rebooting than actually producing power, which rather defeats the object.

Also worth knowing — Hoymiles' DTU monitoring goes completely mental when it can't see a "real" grid signature, so don't expect pretty graphs.

Still works though. Just grumpily.

Really useful thread this. Got a garden office build coming up and have been weighing up exactly this kind of setup.

Quick question for @MasterSolar or @ForestDaz — does the Multiplus need to be in a specific operating mode for the Hoymiles to play nicely with it? I've read conflicting things about whether the AC frequency shifting for power limiting actually works properly when you're running fully island mode with no grid reference.

Also wondering if the HM-600 is the right size or whether I'd be better off with two HM-300s for redundancy across a couple of panels.

My Fogstar lithium bank is only going to be modest (probably 200Ah at 12V to start) so I don't want the microinverter backfeeding more than the battery can handle during low-load periods.

One thing nobody's mentioned yet: AC coupling frequency shifting is how the Multiplus tells the Hoymiles to throttle back when batteries are full. It actually works surprisingly well in practice, but you need to make sure your Victron firmware is current or it gets weird. Had mine do some very odd things after a GX update a while back before I figured that out.

Also worth knowing — the HM-600 has a lower clipping threshold than you'd expect from the name. Factor that into your garden office sizing calculations or you'll wonder why your panels aren't hitting numbers.

For a small office load I'd say the combo is perfectly viable. Just don't expect plug-and-play.
