Been following a similar issue over on the Victron community forums and wanted to bring it here because I reckon a few of us running Quattros will have bumped into this.

The gist: a conventional (non-inverter) generator struggling to properly sync with a Quattro 48/8000. The Quattro is fussy about incoming AC quality — it wants stable frequency and voltage before it'll accept the transfer. Traditional generators like the Yamaha EF6600 can have enough wobble in their output, especially under varying load, that the Quattro just refuses to play ball.

On my narrowboat I run a Victron Quattro 24/3000, and I had a nightmare early on when I borrowed a mate's ageing conventional genny. Kept dropping the connection. Sorted it eventually by:

  • Tightening the AC input frequency tolerance in VEConfigure (went from the default down, carefully)
  • Making sure the genny was properly warmed up before connecting
  • Running a dummy load first to stabilise the engine speed

The inverter-style generators (Honda EU series, Yamaha EF2000iS etc.) are far more stable and sync much more cleanly, but they're pricier and often lower wattage.

For anyone using a big conventional genny as a primary charge source, it might also be worth checking:

  • UPS function settings in the Quattro
  • Whether your AC input current limit is set appropriately
  • Generator AVR condition — a tired AVR causes all sorts of grief

Has anyone else cracked this with a larger conventional genny? Particularly interested if anyone's managed it with a non-inverter unit above 5kW without resorting to an isolation transformer. That feels like the nuclear option but

@BordersOffGrid the EF6600 has notoriously wobbly frequency regulation — I've seen it drift well outside the Quattro's acceptable window, especially under light loads. The Quattro's AC input frequency tolerance is adjustable in VEConfig though, worth widening it cautiously before assuming the genny's faulty.

That said, this really belongs in Inverters & Chargers rather than Batteries & BMS — might be worth asking a mod to shift the thread so the right people see it.

From my own setup running a Quattro 48/5000, I found the UPS function setting made a big difference to how tolerant it was during sync. Have you tried disabling "AC low voltage ride-through" temporarily as a diagnostic step?

Also — is the EF6600 running at consistent load when you attempt sync, or at idle? That'll make a significant difference.

@BordersOffGrid worth checking your AC input frequency tolerance settings in VEConfigure — the Quattro's default acceptance window is fairly tight (47–53Hz typically) and the EF6600's AVR under load can wander outside that before the inverter even attempts a lock.

On my motorhome setup I run a Victron MultiPlus-II rather than the Quattro, but had nearly identical grief with a cheaper Kipor unit. Widening the frequency window to 45–55Hz in VEConfigure sorted synchronisation entirely, though obviously you're then accepting dirtier incoming AC.

Also worth checking:

  • UPS mode vs. normal AC input — UPS mode is far less tolerant
  • Generator minimum load threshold — the EF6600 can run very light and that worsens frequency stability
  • Whether you've got the correct AC input current limit set, as starvation causes the Quattro to drop the input altogether

What firmware version is your Quattro running? Some older builds had stricter hardcoded tolerances.

@LuckyHiker makes a good point about VEConfigure, but before you go widening those tolerance windows too far, bear in mind the Quattro will still struggle if the EF6600's frequency is genuinely unstable rather than just offset.

On my boat I run a smaller Honda alongside a Quattro 24/3000 and Honda's inverter generators sync beautifully — the EF6600 being a conventional unit is likely your core problem here. The AVR on those Yamahas can be temperamental.

Two things worth trying:

  • Run the generator under meaningful load before the Quattro attempts to sync — light loading causes worse frequency wander
  • Check the AC input current limit is set conservatively in VEConfigure to avoid the generator hunting

If syncing remains unreliable, the Quattro's PowerAssist mode is your friend for emergency backup situations anyway — it'll supplement rather than depend entirely on the genny.

@SimonThompson is right to pump the brakes there — widened tolerances on my Quattro 48/8000 once caused it to happily sync with what I can only describe as "electrical chaos" from a dodgy generator at a mate's static van, and the whole system threw a proper tantrum.

Honestly though, the EF6600 and Quattro combo feels like asking a toddler to waltz with a professional dancer — one of them really doesn't want to cooperate.

Worth checking whether a Honda EU series or even the Victron-friendly Genmac inverter-gens are an option instead — proper sine wave output makes the Quattro's job miles easier. Sometimes the cheapest fix is just not fighting the generator lottery.
