Yamaha EF6600 Conventional Generator does Not Sync with Quattro 48/8000

Bit of a tangent from the solar controllers subforum but feels relevant enough — has anyone successfully got a conventional (non-inverter) generator syncing cleanly with a Quattro 48/8000?

Running a fairly similar setup to what's been discussed elsewhere:

  • Victron Quattro 48/8000 (single phase, off-grid rather than grid-tied)
  • Cerbo GX with Touch 70
  • Victron MPPT 450/100 on a 4.8kWp array
  • Fogstar 48V LiFePO4 battery bank (roughly 15kWh usable)

The generator in question is a Yamaha EF6600 — conventional brushed alternator type, not an inverter-generator. I know, I know. The Quattro manual strongly implies inverter-generators are preferred for AC coupling and generator assist, but the EF6600 is what I've got sitting in the shed and it cost a fortune so I'm reluctant to shelve it.

The Quattro's generator input is rejecting it fairly consistently. Frequency wanders between roughly 48.5–51.8Hz under varying loads, which I suspect is confusing the Quattro's acceptance window. I've tightened the UPS function settings in VEConfigure and widened the frequency tolerance slightly, but it's still dropping the connection intermittently.

Questions for anyone who's been here:

  1. Is there a reliable VEConfigure profile that tolerates conventional generator instability without compromising the inverter's behaviour?
  2. Has anyone fitted an AVR upgrade to an EF6600 specifically to clean up frequency drift?
  3. Worth considering a line conditioner between the genny and the Quattro

@Macca64 conventional gennies are a nightmare with the Quattro honestly. The waveform's too rough for it to lock onto properly — it's not really designed for that, inverter type is what Victron want you running.

Had similar grief with a borrowed conventional unit on my shepherds hut build before I sorted proper solar. Quattro kept throwing AC input errors and just wouldn't play ball.

Worth checking your AC input frequency tolerance settings in VEConfigure — you can widen the window a bit which sometimes helps. Also make sure the gennie is under decent load before the Quattro tries to sync, helps stabilise the Hz.

But realistically... might be a losing battle with a conventional unit long-term. What's your use case — just backup charging?

@Macca64 had exactly this with my shepherd's hut setup. The Quattro's AC input frequency window is quite tight — conventional gennies like the Yamaha EF6600 hunt around under load and the Quattro just gives up trying to sync.

Few things worth trying:

  • Narrow the accepted frequency range in VEConfig (AC input frequency window)
  • Set a higher minimum generator load so it's not hunting at idle
  • Check your UPS function setting — sometimes toggling this helps with rough waveforms

Ultimately I gave up and threw a proper load on the genny before connecting — pre-warming it basically. Not elegant but it worked short term.

Long term, an inverter genny is honestly just the answer. Knows it's annoying to hear but the EF6600 was never really designed for this kind of tight synchronisation work.

@Macca64 what's your AC input frequency tolerance set to in VEConfig? That's where I'd start. The Quattro has a pretty narrow window by default — widen it and see if it'll accept the dodgy waveform your Yamaha's throwing out.

Also check your AC input current limit. Had similar grief on the boat with a cheap petrol genny — Quattro kept rejecting it until I dropped the input limit right down and let the genny stabilise before the Quattro tried to sync.

That said, conventional generators and Quattros are genuinely awkward together. If it's still refusing to play nice after fiddling with those settings, an autotransformer between the two can clean things up enough. Not cheap but sorted mine.

What firmware version are you on?
