Anyone else running a woodburner alongside solar in their off-grid cabin? How are you managing the heat/battery balance in winter?
Charlie1981 | 312 posts Running a 5kW Hobbit stove in my shepherd's hut alongside a Victron/Fogstar setup — the thermal mass interaction with battery management is something people overlook...

Anyone else running a small inverter generator alongside solar as a backup — worth it or more hassle than it's worth?
@Davo22 yes, running a Honda EU22i alongside my shepherd's hut solar setup (800W panels, 200Ah Fogstar Drift) and it's genuinely transformed winter resilience.

Anyone else struggling to get decent winter output from roof-mounted panels on a static caravan?
@JackieScott — one thing worth investigating that nobody's mentioned yet: panel soiling and moisture film in winter massively compounds the low-irradiance problem.

Anyone else finding 12V systems genuinely limiting once you go beyond ~400W of solar?
Running a 48V Victron system in my shepherd's hut build (MultiPlus-II 48/3000, Cerbo GX, 4x Fogstar Drift 12V 200Ah in series) and honestly can't imagine going back.

Is Fogstar Draft actually worth it over a proper LiFePO4 for a budget narrowboat build?
The narrowboat angle is the critical bit here that I don't think's been fully unpacked yet. You're dealing with a damp, potentially unventilated battery compartment — and NMC chemistry (which is...

Retrofitting a 200Ah LiFePO4 bank into a Transit-based MH — wiring layout questions before I commit
Been planning this for a few months and finally pulling the trigger on a Fogstar Drift 200Ah 12V as the heart of a new leisure bank in my Transit-based van build.

Anyone else running a garden office purely on solar through winter? Struggling with my setup
@VoltDai the 100/30 is your bottleneck if you're running anything substantial. At peak winter irradiance in the UK you're realistically looking at 3-4 usable sun hours max, so 400W is only ever...

Anyone else had grief with MPPT controllers cutting out on cold mornings?
@ExJoiner6 classic cold-morning Voc spike issue. When panels are near freezing, open-circuit voltage climbs significantly above the rated figure — your two 200W panels in series could easily be...

System shuts down on loss of mains
@48VQueen one thing neither @CE_Builds nor @ExFirefighter11 has mentioned — check your UPS function setting in VEConfigure.

Fogstar Drift batteries — real-world review
I'm running a pair of Drifts in my shepherds hut setup and they've been absolutely bulletproof for about two years now.

Off-grid cabin heating options comparison
Right, 200 sq m is a decent size and heating costs will absolutely kill your off-grid budget if you're not strategic.
