Great points all round. One thing worth adding — if you're doing lots of short winter runs, it's worth setting the DC-DC charger's absorption voltage correctly for your battery chemistry.
I've been running a MultiPlus 2 48/3000/35 for about eight months now, mostly fine on solar and battery, but I'm having a nightmare whenever I try to bring my Honda EU22i generator into the mix.
