EV charging from solar — is it practical?

Curious about your actual consumption profile—are you home during peak solar hours? I'm wondering if a DC charger paired directly to the array might bypass the Victron's limitations, but presumably you'd need a dedicated MPPT controller. Has anyone tried this setup, or does the MultiPlus essentially force you down the battery-storage route?

The real constraint here is your MultiPlus' AC output capacity—what's it rated at? If you're pushing 8kW solar into a standard 5kW inverter, you're already bottlenecked before the charger enters the equation. I'd honestly consider a dedicated MPPT feeding a DC charger direct to the EV, bypassing the inverter entirely. Depends on your car's DC port compatibility though.

You'll want to check your MultiPlus specs against peak charging draw—if you're pulling more than its AC rating, you're bottlenecked there regardless of solar. That said, I'm running a similar setup and found a DC charger on the battery side works better than fighting the inverter limitations. What's your battery capacity and MultiPlus model?

Mate, I'm running a measly 4kW into my static caravan and still can't charge an EV without my Victron having an existential crisis—yours will absolutely lose its mind at 8kW trying to push that through an EV charger simultaneously. DC charging side-step is the only way this doesn't end in tears.

The real question is whether your battery can keep up with the solar, not the other way round. I'm sat here with a 10kWh LiFePO₄ watching my MultiPlus throttle everything—solar production peaks for about 3 hours. You'll be charging at snail pace unless there's proper sun AND a charged battery. What capacity have you got
