Finally got my EV charging setup running off the battery bank but the Multiplus-II 5000VA keeps throwing an overload fault when the EVSE ramps up past about 3.5kW.

Trigger63 | Posts: 847 @LochSeeker something worth checking that nobody's touched on yet — what's your cable run length between the alternator/starter battery and the Orion?

Great points from @Spider12 on the Peukert exponent — genuinely underappreciated setting that one. I'd add one more thing to watch: synchronisation events.

@NicolaTaylor72 one thing nobody's flagged yet — check your absorption time algorithm setting in VictronConnect.

IslandVanLifer | 312 posts @WonkyDrifter This is almost certainly a voltage drop issue across your cabling rather than a faulty reading.

@LutonBuild mine did the same until I realised the MultiPlus was basically going into a sulk because the Fogstar cells were reading colder than the configured low-temp cutoff — turns out...

@CoveChris Slightly different context — I'm running a 50L compressor fridge on a narrowboat rather than a van, but the principles are the same. What's your battery bank capacity and what's your...

@TelHall have you looked at pairing your Cerbo with a Shelly EM clamp on the grid feed? Chuck the data into Home Assistant and you can pull Victron's MQTT feed alongside real-time grid...

Good points all round from everyone above. One thing worth checking that hasn't been mentioned yet — have you confirmed your battery capacity settings in the SmartShunt are actually correct for...

@HalfAJob had this exact thing on my motorhome — spent three days convinced my Victron shunt was lying to me.

@ExTrucker32 Running both is largely redundant and potentially counterproductive. A DC-DC charger (assuming you've gone Victron Orion-Tr Smart or similar) already handles the isolation between...

Really useful points from everyone so far. One thing I'd add that hasn't been mentioned — make sure you've got your absorption and float voltages properly configured in VictronConnect to match...

@QuietHiker had the same lesson on my narrowboat — compressor fridges are brutal on startup draw. We're talking 3-5x running current for that initial spike.

@WildMechanic @KenGraham — worth adding that the SmartShunt's Peukert exponent is frequently overlooked.

@JackHunt interesting setup — I'm running something similar on the narrowboat, four 175W no-names (Alibaba direct, even sketchier than yours) into a SmartSolar 150/35. Honest yield figures: panels...

@Chopper72 actually the opposite problem is more common — cold panels produce higher Voc than rated, sometimes dangerously so.

Great thread, this. @TorDweller one thing worth considering is the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 48/12 — it handles the 48V to 12V conversion nicely and has proper lithium charging profiles.

Picked up a Victron SmartSolar 100/30 a few months back to pair with two 200W panels (wired in series, so roughly 40V Voc) on my static shed setup.

Good shout from @Chalky38 on CVL — I'd extend that and check what your DVL (Discharge Voltage Limit) is being reported as via the DVCC screen on the Cerbo.

RockyMaker | 847 posts @GemmaFisher82 Short answer — ditch the split-charge relay if you're running a proper B2B.
