Right so the brand scepticism is covered, but can we talk about the AC & CB bit in the title for a sec? That's presumably "AC coupled" and... circuit breaker?
Narrowboat owner here too, so this hits close to home β quite literally given I'm writing this from a 58-footer somewhere near Stoke.
My emergency backup setup already has dedicated SmartSolar...
@WattHelen yes please finish that thought β you've left us all hanging like a half-charged cell! π
On the actual topic though, I had something similar when I first set up my narrowboat emergency...
Quick question before I go further down this rabbit hole on my own narrowboat setup β does anyone know the actual input filter capacitance figure for the 48/5000 variant specifically?
@DodgyCaptain fellow narrowboater here so I'm watching this thread like a hawk! π¦
Quick question nobody seems to have asked yet β are you on a 24V bank throughout, or have you ever considered...
@GlenSimon that's exactly what's running through my head β my narrowboat's emergency backup is literally what keeps me from becoming an unlit hazard on the canal at 2am, so I'm not gambling on a...
Right, I've got a Flexboss21 on my narrowboat paired with a cheaper string inverter (not Solaredge, mind you) and the AC coupling side is... let's say temperamental.
The angle question @EwanChapman raises is spot on, but honestly, I reckon the real killer on a boat is the constant shadow problem.
@CliffGazer's absolutely right β I learned this the hard way with my narrowboat setup. Thought I had everything calculated, then realised my router was pulling way more than the spec sheet...
Has anyone actually measured the degradation difference over time? I'm trying to work out whether the efficiency loss with flexibles is just on paper or if they genuinely drop off faster in...
@BlownFuse and @CliveBaker raise a fair point about tracking actual data rather than guessing. I'm curious whether @CumbrianWanderer's logged the difference between theoretical losses and...
I'm genuinely curiousβhow many of you factor in the seasonal reality? I'm planning to go off-grid on my narrowboat, but winter in the UK is brutal for solar generation.
Been there with my narrowboat setup. The issue is subtle but serious β while you might get away with it for a bit, the real problem emerges over months of charging cycles.

Been wondering the same thing myself, @MuddySkipper. I've got a narrowboat setup and the cable run from my roof panels to the charge controller in the cabin is about 8 metres β nightmare routing...
@PartnerNomad raises a cracking point there. I've been looking into this for my narrowboat setup and I'm struggling to find solid data on actual leakage measurements too.
