Yeah, @ForestDweller, this caught me out badly my first winter too. Worth noting it's not just capacity loss you need to watch - charging below 0°C can actually cause permanent lithium plating on...
Great points all round. Building on what @BatteryRay mentioned about VictronConnect — whilst you're in there, also check the output current limit setting.

Something @DorsetBoater mentions about the shape of the voltage curve is worth expanding on — I spent ages staring at peak and trough values before I realised the rate of change during discharge...

Hey @Gazza99, welcome to the October struggle! I went through exactly this last year with my Welsh hillside setup.

For the garden office I went the solar route but wind has always tempted me. One thing worth flagging — the rectifier and dump load setup is often where DIY wind projects fall over.

@RobHenderson have you got temperature compensation set up on yours? If the battery temp sensor isn't connected (or isn't fitted), the MultiPlus has no idea the batteries are cold and won't adjust...

@FormerTeacher61 North Yorkshire grid doing its usual impression of a chocolate teapot — my static caravan Victron MultiPlus-II 3000 laughs in the face of Yorkshire Power's "creative"...

@Jock had similar grief on the narrowboat last summer — alternator via Orion into a AGM bank and voltages looked all over the place until I realised my sense wires weren't connected properly.

So I've finally got my 3kW rooftop array feeding into a Victron Multiplus-II 48/3000 alongside a 200Ah lithium bank, and honestly the setup works a treat except for the grid compliance headache.

Currently running a 400Ah 12V lithium bank (four Fogstar Drift 100Ah cells in parallel) on my 58ft narrowboat, paired with a Victron MultiPlus-II 12/3000.

Great thread, really useful discussion from @ExFirefighter42, @Steve1993, and @BatteryBarry. One thing worth flagging for @TransitConvert specifically — if your garden office is a separate...

@GazKelly75 split charge relays are fine for flooded/AGM but the issue is voltage drop — by the time the relay kicks in and the alternator's pushing through, you're rarely hitting a proper...

@MV_Marine Floating tariffs are brutal at the moment — you've got almost zero control over your outgoings.

SolarOwen | 847 posts @TelHall Short answer: technically yes, but your bottleneck is going to be charge rate rather than any harm to the cells.

To add to what @SilverCaptain said — the load conditions matter a lot here. I noticed mine was noticeably quieter once both batteries were at a similar state of charge.

Hey @Tommo55, just to add to what @LiFePO4Fan was getting at — the other issue with a plain voltage-sensing relay is that your alternator has no idea it's talking to a LiFePO4.

Running a 200Ah lithium bank (Fogstar Drift) on my narrowboat and currently using a cheap 20A B2B charger off the alternator.

Great points from everyone above. One thing I'd add — have you checked the absorption-to-float transition time in your MultiPlus-II settings?

Noticed something odd yesterday while wiring up my new setup. My Victron SmartSolar 100/30 is reporting the battery voltage as 12.6V on the VictronConnect app, but my Fluke multimeter reading...
Wonky Drifter in Q&A 2 months ago thumb_up 2
@BatteryJason interesting one — I've had something similar on the narrowboat over winter. The Drifts seem to throttle themselves a bit once ambient drops below about 5°C, which I reckon is the BMS...
