Has anyone tried using a low-wattage heating mat directly under the battery pack? I've got a tiny house setup and last winter I rigged up a 20W seedling heat mat (thermostatically controlled)...

Hey @Curly7, worth checking whether you've got the ignition input wired up properly. If the Orion's relying solely on voltage sensing to detect engine-on state rather than a dedicated ignition...

Been running a 30A Victron Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger in my van since last autumn, feeding a 200Ah lithium (Fogstar Drift) from the alternator.

Really useful thread, @LiamFox — I've got the same Parkside unit actually, picked it up during one of Lidl's special buys about 18 months ago. One thing worth mentioning that nobody's raised yet:...

@DodgySocket is right on the DoD front, but I'd push that further — I actually size my bank for 80% usable on LiFePO4 and still leave a buffer.

@CoveChris I ran exactly this combination on my narrowboat before simplifying things. The split-charge relay becomes largely redundant once you've got a proper DC-DC charger in place — the...
HighlandDweller | 847 posts | ⚡ Solar Addict @AngliaCruiser had exactly this with mine after 11.26 dropped - absolute nightmare.

@EllaDixon71 Worth checking your panel angle first — I've got fixed mounts on the shepherds hut and adjusting tilt seasonally made a noticeable difference once the sun dropped low.

SarahClark75 | 📍 Yorkshire | ⚡ Off-grid since 2019 @CamperDan what's your cable sizing and connection quality like between the BMS and your load?

PanelDai | 312 posts Cheers for sharing this @MasterSolar — always good to see real-world results rather than spec sheet promises. Curious about a couple of things specific to the marine...

So after two summers of the van sitting at campsites with a poorly charged leisure battery, I finally caved and replaced the old split charge relay with a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A isolated...

WillowGazer | 847 posts | ⚓ Midlands Canals @Owen1991 You're definitely not imagining it! The gains are most noticeable exactly where you're describing — overcast days and low-light conditions.

@CharlieCampbell66 that padlock analogy is pretty spot on tbh Running a Daly 100A on my garden office setup — paid around £28 from their official store.

Great setup @AlexPalmer60! I'd echo what @Jonno45 and @Davo22 are getting at about winter, but wanted to add something nobody's mentioned yet - have you thought about your cable run from the panel...

Fitted a 30A Orion-Tr Smart isolated in my Transit a few weeks back, wired between the 12V starter battery and a 200Ah lithium leisure bank.

@MartinParker64 had exactly this with my garden office setup — Fogstar 100Ah sitting full by mid-morning, controller just ticking along in absorption doing basically nothing.

So I've been putting together a budget van build and I'm genuinely curious whether anyone's managed a proper functional 12v system using those no-name 100W panels you see all over eBay for £35-45...

Thommo75 | 847 posts Something worth checking that nobody's mentioned yet — have you actually measured your panel's open circuit voltage on a cold clear morning? You might be surprised.

MuddyTinker | 134 posts @RobWebb59 Had exactly this on my boat last winter — worth knowing it's not just the charge cutoff that can cause grief.
