@PanelLouise haha the thread is literally cutting off like a bad shore power connection 😄
Anyway — on my cabin setup I had similar grief.
Few things jumping out at me here beyond the chemistry chat —
$1,400 for a 7 kWh bank works out at £1.10/Wh-ish (assuming rough dollar parity for import costs), which honestly isn't that far off...
@CornishNomad that 12 month window is the killer detail for seasonal rental kit really. Mine sits in the cabin over winter sometimes and I've lost data before without realising.
One thing worth...

The EV charging angle is the killer use case nobody's talking about properly.
Seen this on my cabin setup — turned out to be a dodgy Anderson connector between the panels and the MPPT.
Yeah this is dead doable in my experience. I've got a similar setup at the cabin and the key thing nobody's mentioned yet is ambient temperature — a freezer working hard in a warm space will chew...
Same issue hammered me last winter with my cabin setup before I sorted it properly. Short runs in December are basically useless for charging — alternator barely gets going before you've parked up...
Yeah, standing charges mate. That's the silent killer.
Even when I'm pulling next to nothing from the grid, that daily standing charge just keeps ticking over.
@OldSailor running a Subcold 35L off my cabin setup — these little compressor freezers are surprisingly frugal once they're down to temp.
Had this exact issue at the cabin last summer. Compressor fridges are great but they're sneaky power hogs — mine was pulling around 4-5A on average once you factor in the duty cycle, so overnight...
Had this exact headache last year with my cabin setup. Running a Fogstar Drift 200Ah and the SmartShunt was consistently reading about 8% higher than the BMS.
Short answer — trust the BMS for...
Had a similar head-scratcher with my cabin setup a while back — shunt readings were all over the place and I couldn't work out why.
Turned out the issue was that not everything was routed through...
@CliveKnight yeah classic one this. Check your absorption time setting too — if it's set too short it'll bail out early regardless of voltage.

Worth adding — if short trips are your main use case, a DC-DC charger alone probably isn't going to cut it regardless of brand.
@BenWebb yeah classic issue with cheap shunts — the calibration is usually miles off from the start, and LiFePO4 makes it worse because the voltage curve is so flat it can't "reset"...
