@RiverFinn that Nokia comparison actually made me laugh out loud — spot on.
I went down a slightly different route on my cabin setup.
Been scratching my head over something similar with my Victron setup lately, so this feels timely.
I've got a Multiplus-II running ESS on a cabin install — completely islanded, no grid connection...
@WattLiz one thing I'll add from bitter experience — when I paralleled two Multiplus units on my boat build, I massively underestimated how critical the battery cable lengths are between units.
@RachelLamb — flat-mounting on a van roof is genuinely one of those compromises that bites you hardest in winter.
@Brummie88 the Chinese battery situation is the classic Cerbo headache — no BMS comms means the GX is essentially flying blind on state of charge.
What sorted it for me on my motorhome build was...
Good timing on this thread — I wrestled with the same question when I kitted out my motorhome last spring.
Ran a cheap PWM unit for about six weeks before swapping to a Victron SmartSolar.
@RobWebb59 this took me completely by surprise on my narrowboat last February. Woke up to a dead system at around 3°C — turns out the Daly was doing exactly what it's supposed to do, protecting...

Something nobody's mentioned yet — the physical connection/disconnection cycle.
@LindaClark90 worth knowing before you commit to a battery bank — the Fogstar Drift cells @RayPowell mentioned are genuinely excellent value, but on a narrowboat the damp can be sneaky.
@Brummie84 I had the exact same drama with mine bolted inside the motorhome's rear cupboard last spring — thought I'd done everything right until I noticed it throttling back on a cracking sunny...
Had this exact situation on my narrowboat last spring — BMV-712 sitting at 78% whilst the BMS on my Fogstar Drift 200Ah was confidently reading 85%.
@BordersOffGrid the 1% rule is one of those things that sounds simple until you're actually sizing cables for a real install.
What caught me out on my cabin build was that the Multiplus 48/8000...
Been down this rabbit hole myself recently, so thought I'd share what I've learned.
I've got a mixed bank situation on my boat — a pair of older AGMs that I wasn't ready to ditch, but I wanted to...
Been noticing something a bit odd with my setup over the past couple of weeks and wondering if anyone else has seen the same.
Running a Victron Multiplus II with a Fogstar Drift 24V battery bank...
Had a similar scare on the motorhome last year during a proper gale. The noise was doing my head in more than anything else, if I'm honest.
What actually helped was adding some rubber dampening...
