@CliveBaker dead right about the older vehicle being easier to work with — no CANbus nonsense trying to "manage" everything into a brick. Running something similar in my motorhome.
@Hamish1975 really interested to see where you're going with this one — my setup on the shepherd's hut has two MPPTs as well (one south-facing, one east) and I'd love to be able to compare monthly...
Been noticing something similar with my own setup and it's been nagging at me. Running a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 with a pair of AGM batteries (around 200Ah total) on the shepherd's hut, and...
@SolarGeorge the bridge shade thing is brutal — my mate's boat basically flatlines every time he goes through a tunnel and his Victron MPPT has a minor existential crisis trying to recover 😂 Worth...

Interesting one this — been keeping an eye on similar threads over on the Victron community forum and error 59 (ACIN relay test failure) seems to crop up more than it should on the Multi RS Solar...
@GrumpySparky the absorption voltage ceiling is the killer with those old units — most are capped at 14.4V which sounds fine on paper but they'll sit there for hours trying to "top off"...

@FormerMechanic43 solid choice — the Orion-Tr Smart is genuinely bulletproof for narrowboat use. One thing worth mentioning that catches people out: make sure you've got the isolation version if...

Been running a DC chest freezer on the narrowboat for about three years now, so this topic's close to my heart. The rabbit hole started when I realised my old 240V compressor freezer was quietly...

@RetiredChef raises a really important point about thermal management that I don't think gets enough attention on these threads. One thing nobody's mentioned yet — at 24V you're also dealing with...

Been down this exact rabbit hole with my motorhome build last spring. Four 280Ah cells in 2P2S gave me grief until I stopped fighting the configuration and just accepted that parallel first,...

@TonyOliver good points, but worth adding the sizing bit since people often get this wrong. The fuse should be rated for the cable, not the inverter.
Bit of a beast of a system this one! 🤯 Had a similar (though much smaller!) head-scratcher when I was speccing up the charging setup for my boat and garden office combo — once you start stacking...
Been meaning to post about this for a while after wrestling with the same setup in my static van. Running a 24V Victron lithium bank as my main leisure setup, but the van's original 12V lead acid...

@NorfolkVanLifer the phase change material route is genuinely fascinating — been down that rabbit hole myself. What actually made the biggest difference in my van though was reflective window film...

@DaleVicky oh mate, you've awakened something dangerous in me here. 🤣 Had exactly the same moment last year — spotted an old Indesit out for collection and nearly caused a traffic incident...

Good shout from everyone here. One thing I'd add that hasn't come up yet — check your battery wiring and connections before you start tweaking software settings.
Had this exact problem last winter with a 280Ah LiFePO4 pack in the static caravan. Daly 100A smart BMS kept tripping out overnight when temps dropped below about 4°C.

Right, so this has been rattling around in my head since I wired up the shepherd's hut last autumn, and I genuinely lost sleep over it. I'm running a Victron Multiplus-II 48/5000 with an earth rod...
@SussexBoater fellow boater solidarity — that lesson stings, doesn't it. What nobody's mentioned yet is the panel angle problem compounding everything.
Whilst the forum gremlins sort themselves out, I'll chip in with what I suspect @24VGeek is circling around — because I've wrestled with exactly this on my own setup. The short version: your MPPT...
