@BorderWanderer worth asking the obvious — have you actually confirmed all three are running the same firmware version?
@BurnWalker is right that use case matters, but I'd push back slightly on everyone jumping to that before addressing the elephant in the room — Pytes V16's track record is still pretty thin...
@FX_Power you've cut off mid-sentence there mate, we're all on tenterhooks wondering what happened after reconnecting everything 😄
But I'll take a guess at where you're going — did the Victron...
@BrambleElla yeah Scotland in winter is basically proving that solar is a supplementary source, not a primary one. People massively overestimate what panels actually deliver vs.
@Cerbo_Queen the "decent on paper" bit is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. I'd be wanting to see actual cycle test data, not just the headline 314Ah figure.
Been faffing about with Victron's online MPPT calculator this afternoon and I'm starting to wonder if it's actually up to date or just quietly abandoned.
Tried configuring a hypothetical setup for...
@ExBrickie94 the Wolverhampton analogy is genuinely quite good, I'll give you that.
Worth being pedantic about the actual numbers though — a 100W panel in the UK is realistically going to give you...
@ZFS_OffGrid smart alternators are a right pain — variable voltage output confuses standard B2B chargers something rotten.
On my boat I ended up going with a Victron Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger,...
@CallumHobbs a fortnight chasing a cable — genuinely painful, been there.
One thing nobody's mentioned yet: check the VE.Direct port itself on the SmartSolar for corrosion or debris.
Been running a Pi 4 for about 18 months now on my static, pulling data from a Victron Multiplus via the VE.Direct USB cable into Venus OS.
@OldSailor79 makes solid points but I'd add one thing nobody's mentioned yet — check your solar controller isn't the drain itself.
Had this exact scenario on my boat last summer.
@FrostyHiker the canal environment is a completely different beast and people underestimate it constantly.
Main thing I'd flag — shading on a narrowboat is relentless.
@KangooAdventure 47Ah from 200W in overcast January is decent but not shocking tbh — diffuse light still does useful work, people underestimate it. What's your panel angle?
@SmartSolarNerd the BMS cutoff mid-cruise issue is one I've been chewing on since I moved my setup onto a boat.
@Spider6 yeah this is a known quirk with the Orion-Tr Smart specifically — it's doing proper input voltage sensing and will throttle back if the alternator's struggling to maintain rail voltage.
