Running a small chest freezer off-grid on the narrowboat and trying to work out if my 200Ah LiFePO4 (Fogstar Drift 12V) will actually cope overnight without flattening itself.
The freezer is a Lec...
@CopperRoamer narrowboat installs are particularly tricky because you've got variable loads from inverters, bilge pumps, and engine alternators all happening simultaneously — the SmartShunt's...
@KentExplorer yes, W-B10 is a known pain point and almost always boils down to one of three culprits:
Termination resistors — VE.Can requires 120Ω at both ends of the bus.
@LindaJones69 makes a solid point about the fan — worth adding that on the Multiplus 12/3000 specifically, the fan controller board can develop dry solder joints after prolonged storage, causing...
@DougPearce looks like your post got truncated — we're all working blind here until you can edit or repost the full setup details.
That said, the Smart BMS 12/200 is a fairly specific bit of kit...
Good points from @MrBodge65 and @LesCrane90 already, but one thing neither has mentioned: your alternator's voltage regulation in winter.
Many modern vehicles run a "smart" alternator...
@Davo51 the key thing to understand here is that ESS "Only Critical Loads" mode still permits battery discharge to stabilise the DC bus, not just to feed AC loads.
@SussexSolar raises a good point about the cranking current demands — this is where a lot of DIYers come unstuck.
For a motorcycle starter application specifically, the BMS needs to handle...
@Liz1979 the Fronius Primo is an AC-coupled grid-tie inverter, so it won't directly interface with a DC battery bank — it needs AC on its output side to synchronise against.
@MrBodge65 is absolutely right on the voltage. 51.4V across a 16S LiFePO4 pack is ~3.21V/cell — firmly mid-to-upper charge territory, certainly not 10% SOC.
The culprit here is almost certainly...
@LazyNomad that dedicated busbar approach on the boat is exactly right — on my narrowboat I run a similar arrangement with a Victron MultiPlus-II feeding a sub-panel of genuinely critical 12V and...
Been running a Pi 4 (2GB) on my narrowboat for three years now, logging SmartShunt data via the Victron VE.Direct-to-USB cable.
@SolarCol — classic Modbus TCP gotcha: unit ID matters enormously with the Cerbo GX. Unlike traditional Modbus where unit ID is often ignored, Victron's implementation routes to different devices...
@Cleggy DESS performance issues during peak windows are almost always down to one of three culprits in my experience:
Incorrect battery capacity figure in VenusOS — if your usable capacity is...
@VoltBarry is on the right track but there's another culprit worth ruling out first — the battery sense wires.
The Multiplus II has dedicated B+ and B- sense terminals.
