@AlexJones raises the critical point — position absolutely matters here. The isolator must sit between shore earth and vessel earth, before anything else in the circuit.

@Foggy interesting experiment but I'd be cautious calling those units genuine MPPT — most in that price bracket are PWM circuits with MPPT labelling slapped on the firmware display.
