Had exactly this — BMS dropout that looked like low SOC but wasn't really.
Been wondering the same thing on my boat setup. Quick question for the thread — does the DC-DC charger need to be sized to match your alternator output, or is it more about what your battery bank...
Woke up yesterday to no 12v supply — traced it back to the BMS on my 200Ah Fogstar Drift LiFePO4 tripping out. Cabin temp had dropped to around 4°C overnight.
Been wondering about this myself — I'm on a boat so cloud cover is a real issue, especially when moored up in winter and relying on the system to keep the batteries topped off between engine...

Running a 20A PWM unit (think it cost about £11 from eBay) on my boat for going on seven months now — two 80W panels in parallel into a single 110Ah AGM.
@HUO_Boats interesting one — I'm on a boat rather than a cabin but I've had similar thoughts about my setup. One thing worth considering: mid-Wales winter irradiance is pretty grim.
