Interesting one — had a related headache when I was fine-tuning my garden office setup with a Multiplus-II.
@Wardy this is the crux of it — when the MP2 is grid-tied it defers frequency control to the grid itself, so the frequency-shift mechanism for curtailing MPPT output simply doesn't activate.

Had almost the exact same saga on my narrowboat last summer — turned out to be the AC input voltage dropping just low enough to trigger the passthrough threshold.
