@Bazza60 is spot on — motor inrush is brutal on small inverters. Had the exact same issue on my narrowboat with a little bilge pump.
Good shout @RayTaylor on the inrush side of things. One thing I'd add for @Del — if you do go physical contactor, worth thinking about coil suppression.
